One of Toronto’s largest and most highly anticipated developments has officially opened its doors to the public ahead of the holiday season.

In a ceremonious ribbon-cutting ceremony held on November 17th, 2023, RioCan Real Estate Investment Trust brought members of the community together to celebrate the significant completion of commercial, residential, and retail spaces on site, and The Well’s first year of holiday programming. Those in attendance also included dignitaries, community groups, and project team members, alongside The Well’s retail, office and residential tenants.

Located on north-west corner of Front and Spadina in Downtown Toronto, The Well is massive mixed-use project from RioCan and Allied Properties, in partnership with Tridel and Woodbourne Canada Management. Formerly the location of the original Globe and Mail headquarters, the 7.67 acre site was acquired in 2011 with construction ongoing since 2017. The project contains 1.2 million square feet of office space, 320,000 square feet of retail and food service offerings, and 1,700 residential units across 6 residential and rental buildings.

The Well is an incredible achievement in Canadian real estate. It was important to bring the community together to mark this significant milestone,” says Jonathan Gitlin, President and CEO, RioCan. “The Well is emblematic of our ability to deliver unitholder value while simultaneously engaging in responsible community-building. Our team’s vision, focus, and commitment to excellence has made The Well the most anticipated project in the country. We are excited to see the momentum continue to build in the coming weeks and months with the cascading opening of our impressive roster of retail and food service tenants.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony also kicked off The Well’s first year of holiday programming. Visitors to the site will find immersive, arctic-inspired decorations, and will find The Well’s signature glass canopy lit up during the evening hours, Thursday to Sunday from 6-10pm, in the style of the Aurora Borealis, presented by Destination Canada.

Other features of The Well’s seven-week holiday programming include:

The Rink – complimentary community skating is available all week long on The Rink, presented by Scotiabank. On Sundays, guests can take in one of the skating exhibitions where professional figure skaters entertain the crowd.

NORDIC by BarChef - within the charming yurt or out on the fire pit lounge, guests can enjoy holiday cocktails while taking in a stage performance.

Veuve Clicquot Champagne Lounge – guests can unwind beneath the glass canopy with a flute of Veuve Clicquot champagne in the champagne lounge.

Live Performances – live performances on our stage, including family entertainment, live music by emerging artists and a rotation of DJs.

Blanket Check Hut – guests can enjoy complimentary blanket service to take in a stage performance from the Wellington Steps. For furry companions, there are complimentary blankets, pup-cups by Gay Lea and all-natural biscuits.

Stardust Bridge – using a unique light system, The Well’s Grand Bridge will be transformed into a visual, interactive installation.
